The Chameleon Approach
I recently coined this phrase “the chameleon approach” when discussing with other publishers/webmasters about how to increase their CTR’s and revenue on each of their sites. First let’s begin by explaining what a chameleon is. It’s a reptile that has an awesome defense mechanism which enables it to meld itself into it’s surrounding environment to avoid being eaten by predators. So what does this little guy have to do with webmasters and marketing?
Well, over the last year or so Yahoo released it’s beta of YPN as a great alternative to those who didn’t feel like lowering themselves to the strict regime of Google AdSense. When YPN leaves beta stages in the late Fall of 2006, I’m sure MSN will come out with their beta of whatever contextual publisher solution they are planning in their evil M$ labs. But don’t be afraid, because this is actually awesome news. We are going from one dominant force in contextual advertising (AdSense), to three total. Now the point of these networks is a huge benefit for webmasters, even more so than for advertisers, because webmasters now have a chance to truly bank from their sites. Sure, AdSense was amazing until recently, but Google gives us very little feedback on what we can do to enhance our ads, aside for changing around the colors and sizes of the ads, big woop Google, thanks for that.
Your site is your bread and butter. It’s your platform for generating income, and for many of you, a savior to break away from your boring 9-5 job working for the man. So if it’s so damn important to you, why are you still following the generic form of advertising? You guys are much smarter and even more creative than you may think.
So back onto the topic of chameleon marketing. Your goal should be to generate income, correct? Alright, so why not meld your ads INTO your content, instead of putting up the generic leaderboards and 468 banners and those ever so obvious vertical flashy banners. People KNOW those are ads, and if they’re interested, sure, they’ll click it, but you should want to get clicks out of people interested in your content, not only the ones interested in the ads. By taking the ads and turning them into chameleon ads, you will increase your CTR and income by a TON (I’m too lazy to give out figures).
I most recently gave some advice to a good friend by telling him to get rid of all of his AdSense banners and squares, and to meld them into his content. After a day or so of testing out different methods, he’s now averaging a 1.2% CTR as opposed to his old avg of 0.4% CTR. That’s a huge difference I think! He’s in the UK so he can’t enjoy the benefits of YPN yet, but I can assure you, YPN CTR’s are INSANE and the revenue is HUGE too.
So by taking ads from YPN or AdSense (YPN is SO much better to work with, and their CTR’s and payouts are just awesome) and making them LOOK like they are part of your content, by switching the types of ad formats around, you will increase your overall CTR and payout. Your users will think that the ads are part of the site, which is really what Google and Yahoo’s approach was in the beginning.. to create an ad network to serve relevant ads to the topic on websites relevant to what advertisers are offering. Sooner or later this will become the norm, and your CTR’s may go down, but for the time being, it’s time to jump onto the bandwagon of cash and earn what you’ve been waiting for!
