Affiliate Marketing - A Mind Game
Time and time again, webmasters are constantly seeking that one golden secret that the big boys seem to know and keep safeguarded away from them. Other times people we’ve never heard about make false claims with inflated stats to sell their ebooks and self help products that make you wonder “well, if it works so damn well, why don’t you keep it a secret and just replicate the crap out of it yourself?”. Yeah, well, the answer to that question is because they are either too lazy to keep on doing it and want to cash out really quickly, or they never really accomplished it, and know that since everyone is looking for an answer, they can tell a pretty good story to make you believe that they have it. Which leads me to the next question, of all of these self help ebooks and fluff, have you made it big yet? Have you done as well as the author or even come close to it? The answer is probably no. Sure, they may have made a few great statements and points, given you some new ideas, but really, all of these products are the same product of Grade-A 100% pure packaged bullshit.
So how does a regular webmaster win big in the affiliate marketing game exactly? Just like a recipe for a cake, you can’t just make something out of one ingredient, you have to combine them, measure them out correctly, and follow specific steps to come out with a final product that absolutely rocks. And just like with baking, as a newbie in the field you will fail, make mistakes, and most probably will not succeed as much as the pro’s do, especially on your first time. But it’s up to you, and you only to keep plugging away and staying focused with your eye on the prize.
This is by far, the biggest mistake ever made by webmasters who are trying to conquer a market. Their drive for success just plain sucks. Don’t get offended and deny it either, because if you aren’t happy with your success, or you have had very little or no success at affiliate marketing, then your drive to succeed is not where it should be. Don’t ask me where it is, because I don’t have that answer for you. You should know yourself well enough now to realize that you need to change the way you work, research, think, and develope your sites and strategies.
To get yourself into the right state of mind, with the right attitude you have to do something that really excites you and gets you revved up. For me, I like mob movies and movies about guys pulling off big jobs while everyone doubts them. I don’t sit there and watch a full movie to get myself revved up, instead, I’ll sometimes take a DVD of The Godfather, and watch some of my favorite parts. The whole thing takes 20 minutes or so. Sometimes, when I’m not in the mood for that, I’ll listen to a song that gets me in a real working type mood, something fast and heavy usually, like Metallica, or a really high energy trance track or set. Generally, when I’m doing my work I am listening to trance music. I know a lot of people don’t get it, but this is something I like a lot, and it keeps me focused, happy, and energized. I also have a drink near me at all times, usually soda, and I go out for cigarette breaks every so often. It may not be a healthy routine, but it’s my routine, and it works very well for me.
So now that you’ve laid out what gets you revved up and ready to work, you have to actually have this great thing called FOLLOW THROUGH. With many of my projects, including the blog, follow through is by far the toughest thing to master. Following through with your ideas and projects is tough because you have to sit down for what seems to be long periods of time to perfect it. It seems like suck a daunting task usually, so I’ll procrastinate it, put it off for another time or for “later”, except later almost never arrives.
My point is that you cannot give yourself excuses anymore. Don’t let anything get in your way. If you have a task to do, do it, and move onto the next thing. If you are doing something well, and making money from it, there are always areas to improve on. Comparing your setup to your competition’s is key, because you can bet that they are doing the same with their setup to yours.
The answer to the secret is that one of the most serious ingredients to really succeed is getting yourself in the right state of mind. The most common mistake is when a webmaster convinces themself they are ready for the project, but really, all they are ready to do is count their money, or even worse, what they could be making (spending it before they’ve made it). This is poison to a potentially successful webmaster. The answers to your questions are laid out right before you, it’s up to you to reach out and grab it and do something with it. If all those idiots that make the bullshit ebooks can do it, so can you.

I think you’re absolutely right that in the end it all comes down to persistence. It’s pretty easy to see why they say the people that are successful are usually the ones who are easily motivated.
Offtopic I agree with you on the music genre. Trance is a great choice because it keeps one motivated and concentrated without being too distracting.
I think of myself as a persistent person, but the follow through thing seems so hard sometimes, when I’ve done my promotion stuff and I’ve done all the tweaking and optimising, but the site isn’t “taking off” yet.
After a few days of not knowing what to do I just get caught up with a new idea.
oh, forgot to ask - Jon, when’s wickedfire gonna be up?
good post Jon, a reall nice kick in the anus!
KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE PRIZE!!!!
shame im a moron when it comes to affiliate sales but im learning
WickedFire.com will be up shortly. I have so much good stuff planned for it too. I’ll make a launch announcement here, no worries.
I agree that the follow through is vital. It’s easy to get disheartened when you see little to no results for what can often be a long long time after first starting out. Keeping at it can also seem like a waste of energy. I think the y key is to put aside those niggling doubts and just do it.
Its the doubts that keep us poor, its the follow through that helps us to be free.
Thats a very good message though I think it is commen sense among most people. I think problems come up when the motivated person does not know what to do next. You can be motivated to the bone, but if you have no idea what to do next your motivation meens nothing.
Jon’s best post so far in my opinion! It’s so applicable to me it’s untrue. I spend ages creating really nice sites because that’s what I enjoy doing. The bit I fall down on is when it comes to promoting them. I HATE link building. So boring! Unfortunately it’s also the hardest thing to effectively outsource. But without traffic a website is nothing, so that’s really where I need to work on my follow through. Knowing that doesn’t make it any easier though.
I’m exactly the same, Chromate.
Jon would you mind writing an article about link building?
I’m exactly the same too, Chromate. The site that I am currently building now I want to spend a considerable amount of time promoting it too. This is something that I never really put much effort into in the past.
I have been really going at it with link building becuase I want my site to work. I have also been checking out different promotion methods. i have gotten a few good links for no reason at all, people just pick stuff up and move it along. I’m talking PR6 and topic related.
I find that emailing is the best way to get links, just find related sites that you like the look of and whip up a template email and send it to all of them. You will get a slow trickle of replies but a lot of them will be positive, I do this about three times a month and I get about 2 new links a week.
Very well said. The cake analogy is spot on.
