Domaining - The Project Of A Lifetime & Some Other Junk Too
Well, just when I thought this industry couldn’t throw me anymore new surprises, I get a bunch of curve balls tossed my way, one after the other. Finally though, it’s really good news for me.
I’m not going to say just yet what it is, but it’s in the nature of the domaining industry. So for all of you who were waiting to hear how I cracked the Google algos over the last year, tough luck. Maybe I’ll sell that info on ebay someday, you know, just to go out with a bang, and hopefully no more lawsuits! Haha!
This new project is something where the more in-depth market research I have been doing on it, the more obvious it becomes that a little voice in my head says “Jon… don’t fuck this up”. I don’t really hear voices, well, not anymore… THAT WAS A JOKE.
The reason I’m so excited and hope it works out so that I can tell more people about it is because it finally allows me to get tons of friends and people I really respect in the entire internet marketing industry together, to collaborate on a single project in which everyone can not only make money for themselves but be proud of something and say “yeah, I worked on that project”. See, I can be a total greedy asshole about it and keep it to myself and say “fuck you” to everyone and just be a douche about it. But over the years I’ve done a lot of growing up. Even though lots of my more vocal critics don’t agree. I really have done a lot of maturing in the business world. I know this, because the old me, pre-WickedFire, would have focused purely on the revenues/profits, and not on the overall project’s goals. The old me also would have focused more on a quick flip, meaning, get in, get out, and move on to the next project.
To date, WickedFire has been the longest running project of my 14 year career. Even the adult stuff, I got bored so quickly and went on to do lots of side shit, only to sell out completely and move on in the end. But with WickedFire, I love it. I have been trying to distance myself from it lately, only because I don’t want to be emotionally attached to it just in case the time comes somewhere down the road where my job is ultimately done and I have to make a decision to send it off into someone else’s care. Which is entirely possible, but I’ve learned the hard way in that when you allow your emotions to effect your judgement in a business decision, you almost always get the ‘browner’ end of the stick.
The emotional tie to a project has it’s benefits for sure, but when the time comes for an exit, if you’re still attached, you’re only going to hurt your possibilities at getting the better part of the deal. I see this ALL the time. For instance, take a look at any forum’s marketplace where people are selling websites that they spent a year or two developing, or neglecting and want to sell it off. SitePoint’s Marketplace, although in my opinion, I think it’s one of the greatest marketplaces in the industry, there are just SO many people who overvalue the shit out of the sites they are selling. They almost always tack on this bullshit about how it’s “potentially” an amazing site to buy, or how it’s got tons of “potential to make 10x more”. I recently dropped a comment on DT’s blog about how Harmony.com is up for auction with a BIN price of $5M. WTF?! $5,000,000 for “Harmony.com”. Are you insane?! Talk about overpricing! Sure enough though, the words used in the pitch were “potential”. Selling things on “potential” is like taking a canvas, having a child splatter paint all over it, and then submitting it to Sotheby’s for auction as a “potentially” great investment, because someday the kid who made it will become the scientist to find a cure for cancer, and because it was his first painting, it will be worth $20M. Alright, maybe that was taking it a bit far, but you get my drift.
And so, you can clearly tell I have ADD right? I mean staying focused on one topic is kinda… oh look, a bird!

ADD is such an advantage. I call the time I use not paying attention to what other people are saying/doing “ADD Spare Time” and with it and some imagination is usually how all my website ideas are thought up. Cherish it.
